Big weekend for the movies…
Posted on March 5, 2010 · Leave a CommentThis is a big movie weekend! Not so much that it’s Oscars weekend, although I do want to see Avatar clean house. I’m also trying to go see two of the new releases coming out – Brooklyn’s Finest and Alice in Wonderland. Check out the trailer for Brooklyn’s Finest…
This is my type of movie to the core – a gritty, intricate cops-and-robbers type flick. And Don Cheadle and Ethan Hawke are two of my favorite actors. I can’t imagine it will disappoint.
Freaknik 2010???

So there’s a buzz going around Atlanta that Freaknik may be making its way back into the city. Freaknik started as a festival/street party back in 1983 by Historically Black College and University (HBCU) students who couldn’t afford to go home for spring break. As the event increased in popularity during the 1990s, more and more people traveled from all over to participate in the dancing, drinking, parties, basketball tournaments, concerts, film festivals and job fairs.
Freaknik was notorious for gridlocking many of Atlanta’s streets and the festival’s reputation has been tainted by what could be described as wild and out of control behavior by partygoers.
After the city of Atlanta blocked the event in 1999, it never found a new home. Well, apparently a website called “Freaknik Atlanta” last week claimed that event organizers were looking to bring it back in April 2010 (I searched but couldn’t find the site).
If it’s up to new Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed, Freaknik won’t happen. In recent interview with WSB regarding the return of the street festival, Reed stated,”I don’t believe it will materialize and it’s not my intention for the city to be supportive of it.”
What do you think, Tamarron residents? Should Freaknik come back to Atanta? Let your voice be heard!
Don’t put your hat and gloves away just yet
Posted on March 2, 2010 · Leave a CommentAccording to WSB-TV Chief Meteorologist Glen Burns, more snow than expected is headed towards Atlanta.
According to Burns, “new weather models suggest more snow is heading this way — as much as 1 to 3 inches in metro Atlanta and up to 6 inches in far north Georgia — and that it will stick in some places.”
Our advice to Tamarron residents, stay at home! If you do have to go out, please remember to drive safely. Check out these tips for driving in snow and ice, courtesy of Edmunds.com.
Homegrown Hip-Hop: Collective Efforts, J Live, Dillon, DJ Synthesis

What are you getting into this weekend? If you’re free on Friday (Feb. 26) at 9 p.m., make a move over to Smith’s Olde Bar on Piedmont Ave. and check-out Collective Efforts for a fresh twist of some homegrown, underground Atlanta hip-hop.
This isn’t the stuff you hear on the radio. They have a golden-era sound that reflects a mix of legendary groups like The Roots, Goodie Mob and Little Brother.
According to their website, the group recently “added a backing band to the mix, bringing its musicianship to new levels by incorporating soul, rock, jazz and reggae influences. The band headlines this show in celebration of the release of its fourth full length, Freezing World, a semi-conceptual album about man’s struggle for survival during hard times. Their efforts will be joined by cohorts J Live, Dillon and DJ Synthesis.”

Who Has the Worst Traffic?
Posted on February 16, 2010 · Leave a Comment
Well, it’s not Atlanta. I know it’s hard to believe for those of us who have experienced the nightmare that can be the downtown connector, but it seems that Detroit and Tampa are beating out our capital city.
Forbes ranks Atlanta as having the third worst commute. There is a large percentage of drivers who take over an hour to get to work and it also says 13 percent of drivers avoid driving alone. Not very green for Atlanta, but hopefully we can improve that.
What do you think of these findings? Is Atlanta traffic really that bad?
